Jun. 19 – Pressing Onward: How Migrant Mothers Resist Legal Violence
In this talk, Dr. Jessica Cerdeña will discuss how state failure in Latin America drives migration to the United States, how racist and capitalist policies of immigration enforcement control migrant bodies, and how migrant mothers living in Connecticut demonstrate âimperative resilienceââdefined as social and cognitive strategies to resist oppressionâto build futures for their families.

Apr. 17: Evaluating Inequities in Refugee & Im/migrant Health Service Access
Join us for the CGSHE Speaker Series with Dr. Mei-ling Wiedmeyer in April. She will outline findings and recommendations from the IRIS project, which is completing 5 years of mixed-methods data collection and analysis on the health experiences of im/migrants in B.C.
Feb. 28: Geographic Access to Gender-Affirming Care
How geographically is gender-affirming care? In this upcoming talk, Dr. Avery Everhart will discuss a case study modeling access to gender-affirming hormone therapy and some preliminary data on travel patterns in accessing gender-affirming. This event has been rescheduled to Wednesday, February 28.

Dr. Fast will discuss factors that impact decisions about pregnancy and early parenting among young people who use drugs in the context of unstable housing and homelessness in Vancouver, B.C.

Aligning with the focus of this yearâs World Sexual Health Day, Dr. Kathleen Deering will speak to the intersections between disclosure of HIV status, consent and sexual health in the context of discriminatory laws and practices in Canada.

Dr. A.J. Lowik will explore common methodological and measurement missteps when it comes to gender and sex, and demonstrate how accuracy, precision and inclusion can facilitate more robust and equitable research praxis.
May 17 – Queer Worldmaking in Mental Health
Dr. Meera Dhebar will discuss the centering of queer of colour cultural knowledge within the professional practice of mental health systems to move beyond the current models of LGBT competencies and affirming therapy to a practice called âqueer worldmakingâ.
Gender/Sex/ual Diversity: Towards More Liberatory Theory & Measurement
Many scientific approaches to gender/sex/uality rely on binaries, and are limiting, inaccurate, and a cause of harm, especially to marginalized groups. In this talk, Dr. SariâŻvan Anders discusses new research about gender/sex/uality that is built for and from gender/sex/ual diversity.
