About the Talk

Kijibashik (Turn It Around) and KEEP2 are two projects in collaboration with Indigenous organizations to hear the stories of previously incarcerated Indigenous moms, men, women and Two-Spirit peoples. Dr. Mashford-Pringle will discuss the projects and the current issues facing Indigenous peoples and incarceration. Akiikaa: It is the Land is the premise for the Master of Public Health in Indigenous Health pedagogical approach. Land-based learning is extremely important for the MPH-IH and can assist with healing for previously incarcerated Indigenous peoples. She will discuss how returning to Indigenous ways of knowing and being are important to healing and reconciliation.

About the Speaker

Dr. Angela Mashford-Pringle is an Algonquin woman from Timiskaming First Nation. She is an Assistant Professor, Indigenous Health Lead and Associate Director at the Waakebiness-Bryce Institute for Indigenous Health, Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto. Dr. Mashford-Pringle is the Program Director of the Master of Public Health in Indigenous Health (MPH-IH) and the Director of the Collaborative Specialization in Indigenous Health. She is the founding editor of the Turtle Island Journal of Indigenous Health (TIJIH), a graduate student-led journal and the former co-editor of the International Journal of Indigenous Health (IJIH).

Dr. Mashford-Pringle has moved toward Indigenous pedagogies and ontologies by using Land as Teacher in her graduate teaching. She works with Indigenous communities in urban and rural settings with issues related to Indigenous health including culture, language, land-based learning, climate action, and policy analysis and development. Dr. Mashford-Pringle holds Tri-Council funding for storywork with previously incarcerated Indigenous peoples and is examining barriers to family reunification after incarceration. Her previous work included over a decade at the federal government in Indigenous initiatives, Chief Research Officer for Peel District School Board and inaugural Programs Manager for Centennial College.
